A former England international graced the Anglo American Playing Fields but was unable to stop Saffron Walden from claiming the win in the East Anglian Premier League.

Spinner, Monty Panesar had boosted the ranks of Norfolk side Great Witchingham but it was Walden who closed out a four-wicket win.

The home bowlers produced great economic spells, keeping the run-rate below four-an-over for much of the innings.

Ali Hancock, back after injury, took 3-34 while spinner Oli Rae managed 2-61.

A third-wicket partnership of 81 though gave Witchingham a potentially defendable total of 257.

In return, opener Tom Bonham’s innings of 51 runs off 36 balls was authoritative and destructive.

Alex Pierson (47) and Jack Sneath (35) batted intelligently and kept the scoreboard ticking over with a partnership of 68 runs in the middle overs.

Wickets fell but Walden managed to stay above the run rate throughout and Bryn Mendel (50*) finished the game by picking the right ball and executing it perfectly.

The other three senior sides though were all defeated, as was the club's U15s, missing out on a place in the ECB National T20 finals.

They lost the regional semi-final to Dorridge by 67 runs

Opening bowlers Fergus Lidell and Charlie Hoyle took early wickets and sharp fielding had Dorridge 68-3 at the halfway point of their innings.

Chris Smith took a further wicket in the 12th over, but a 60-run partnership put Dorridge on a commendable total of 175-4.

Needing to maintain a run rate of nine per over, Walden opening bat Smith responded strongly with 10 off the first over and Alexi Demtri-Foulds batted strongly for the best part of an hour at a strike rate of 124, before falling at the end of the 13th over for 41 runs.

At 63-3, at the halfway point, Walden had a comparable score to Dorridge but losing key wickets left them unable to find the needed boost in the final overs and they finished on 108-9.

It was a disappointing weekend for High Roding as all three teams lost.

After a run of nine unbeaten matches, their trip to Springfield ended in a six-wicket defeat.

Roding scored 196-9 off 45 overs but Springfield passed that total to finish on 197-4.

The second team suffered a similar fate when they lost at home to Bentley.

Bentley were all out for 203, Harry Pilcher having a great session with the ball taking 5-19 and joined by 2-21 from Rory Burns and Charlie Smith's 2-41.

After knocks of 33 by George Haddon and Pilcher adding 30, Roding fell away to finish on 172.

The thirds were bowled out for 100 by Essendon, Jeff Clarke the one stand-out with 43, and there was no problem in reaching the target.
