There is an outside chance of snowfall in the county going into the weekend.

But it’s not likely to stick around for long.

Although the end of February is usually considered the last day of winter the Met Office has issued warnings across much of the country.

In the east this is a yellow ‘be aware’ warning.

But any snow that does fall is very unlikely to bring major disruption.

Jim Bacon from forecasters Weatherquest said the chance of seeing some of the white stuff could be a close run thing.

It may even be that constant rainfall could drop the temperature enough to turn the rain to snow.

“One of the problems is that often at this end of the season snowfall is usually very marginal,” he said.

“There is a possibility that when this front comes across the country at the end of tonight, on the back of it there could be some cold air.

“If it rains hard enough it could become snow instead of rain.”

He said it was hard to prepare for snow falling in this way because any grit put down too early would be washed away by the rain.

“These are very difficult events to deal with because you’ve got to wait until it’s become a problem before you can do anything about it.”

But while a late flurry of snow could be coming our way, though it is more likely on higher ground, it probably won’t be settling.

Mr Bacon said: “At this time of the year if you have snow falling on the ground it has a fair bit of residual warmth.

“If it does settle it won’t last long.”

The Met Office’s warning is valid from five past midnight until noon tomorrow.

On their website they said: “The public are advised to be aware of the potential for some disruption to travel especially during Friday morning rush hour.”
